4-star defender Phil Picciotti dedicated to Oklahoma on Monday evening

Oklahoma fans are conditioned to expect some recruiting fireworks on July 4, and the class of 2023 continues that tradition.

Perkasie (Pa.) Pennridge Upper inside linebacker Phil Picciotti was honored this year, announcing its commitment to the OU on Monday night.

Picciotti, a four-star prospect, selected OU from the final four teams of Michigan, Auburn, Nebraska and the Sooners and was the 11th-placed finisher for the 2023 division.

This is the fourth year in a row the Sooners have won at least one Independence Day pledge/weekend, joining Bryson Washington (class of 2020), Caleb Williams and Latrell McCutchin (2021) and Jacob Sexton and Robert Spears-Jennings last year.

When Piciotti was made available by OU in the winter, it didn’t sound like much with Penn State looking like a clear favorite after being on multiple PSUs in a short period of time.

But Picciotti did what the head coach Brent Venables lecture, visit the original campus to show that you are interested and then return for an official visit.

He visited for a spring internship and narrowed his selection down to the last four schools of his tour month. Picciotti made an official visit to all four schools, arriving in Norman for the June 3 ChampU Family BBQ event over the weekend.

The Sooners feel like the favorite of the quartet as June approaches, and nothing seems to have changed over the course of four visits.

Picciotti becomes second consecutive support provider for OU as Samuel Omosigho announced its organizing unit last Thursday and 10th overall for OU’s class.

OU fans requested some fireworks on the trail. This will be the week. OU comes in at 41st in the team standings, but Picciotti will be the starter to a great week for the Venables and the Sooners.
