Taking a walk around the neighborhood is one of my favorite ways to add more activity to my daily routine – especially during the summer. I try my best to spend at least 20 minutes of my day walking somewhere, whether that means running errands, going for a quick visit with friends, or just taking in the sights around town.
When I heard that interesting walking at-home workouts were trending on YouTube with over 2.3 million subscribers, I was curious to learn more. The idea of indoor walking didn’t appeal to me at first – what’s the point of stepping indoors when you can change the landscape by doing it outdoors? Fast forward to 10 minutes I’m trying Grow with Jo’s Fast 3 Mile Dance Partyand I’m not only following the rhythm of the exercise, but also sweating.
After that first training session, I was hooked and had to practice more. Here’s what happened when I did the best of Grow with Jo’s YouTube walking workouts.
HHow much does Grow with Jo cost?
Grow with Jo’s YouTube workouts are completely free. While there are options for weight exercisesMost of her workouts can be done with just a mat, some sneakers, and a very small amount of space to work out. Since most moves only take 4-5 steps to the left, right, forward or backward of your exercise space, this workout can be done even in the smallest apartments.

YouTube’s platform allows you to navigate to similar workouts after clicking on the one you want to start, which can also help guide your experience.
If you’re choosing your own adventures in the Grow with Jo YouTube channel, you can sort by most recently uploaded or most popular, but not by workout type. I decided to sort by popularity and committed to trying out the most viewed walking exercises.
When you click on each video, you’ll be presented with a summary of what the workout will include, the best fitness levels, and a breakdown of each song included and how long it plays. More recent videos also detail how many calories you’ll burn and what settings to use on your Apple watch to track your workout progress.
What is a Grow with Jo workout?
Grow with Jo’s at-home walking workouts are set up like a big dance party in her living room. They vary in duration and some focus on specific body parts or goals, like burning fat or weight loss. While some of the walking exercises feature rhythmic walking without lyrics, others are themed around popular songs of the moment or certain era, such as her Encanto-themed exercise. or Dance practice of the year 2000.
In each video, personal trainer Johanna Devries, founder of Grow with Jo, starts things off by introducing the exercise, stating what the goal of the exercise will be (e.g. burning calories, increasing the pace). heart), with the end goal always to leave you feeling your best at the end.
From there, a timer appears in the left corner of the screen, counting down how long you’ll take each move as the Devries move to the beat of the music, guiding you step-by-step. On the right-hand side of the screen, you’ll have a preview of your next move, thanks to a mirror showing another version of Devries making the next move.
Exercises last from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on which you choose.
I Tried Growth With Jo Home Walking Workout
I have tried a lot virtual workout in the past two years. Every time I put a new lesson on the test, there is bound to be a period where I feel I need to get to know my new instructor.
The first thing I noticed about Grow with Jo is that this warm-up phase is virtually non-existent. Her upbeat attitude and genuine excitement when it comes to getting started can be contagious even through the screen, and I felt instantly ready to start with her in her pursuit of music.
I decided to try 3 mile fast dance party This is my first workout: a 30-minute workout that will take you three miles. The workout begins with familiar movements set to an upbeat soundtrack; movements such as kicking the butt and high knee are interspersed with marching in place, along with more choreographic-like movements such as stepping with one foot and bringing hands back, to the beat. The movement you’re doing changes every 30 seconds, giving you enough time to do it without getting bored. The moves also repeat throughout, so you’ll have a chance to try again if you don’t make it on the first shot.
You get out of this exercise what you put into it, and I decided to work especially hard on the first day because I felt it. It’s only been 10 minutes, I’m already sweating, but catching up is easy thanks to the way Devries previews upcoming moves on the right side of the screen.
When I woke up the next day, I was surprised to find that my arms and legs were already sore from the workout, but I decided to keep going. I opted for the 15-minute Black Eyed Peas dance workout, which still revolves around a lot of marching in place, but incorporates more fun movements like shoulder brushing while stepping left and right, knee high with knee and buttock movements. bouncing squat which I think would make the band proud.
One of the most challenging workouts I’ve tried is the Grow with Jo 3 Mile Walk Morning Cardio Abs workout. This exercise is 40 minutes long and focuses on ab cinching vertical motion such as cross-body leg lifts and cross-toe squatting alternating with marching. I finally stopped breathing and my abs felt sore for days afterward.
What I like about the Grow with Jo walk
I can’t believe these workouts are free. Having to wait or skip ads on YouTube is not a small price to pay for the value of the Grow with Jo platform. Not only are the exercises versatile in length, format, and level of experience, but they’re also incredibly fun to do. I can’t recall another workout where I didn’t end up feeling the slightest bit hesitant about having to log in and get through it. Although Grow and Jo’s walking workouts are very similar, every day I try these exercises feels so different, thanks to the way she themes them around a variety of exercises, goals, and music. .
What I don’t like about the Grow with Jo walk
I wish there was an easier way to navigate the YouTube platform. I appreciate having playlists grouped by experience level, but I find myself wanting to sort by workout duration, type, and topic. There are plenty of exercises available on Grow with Jo that are themed by popular music – however, those that don’t feature recognizable songs and play only one beat will start to feel lackluster after a while.
