First Look: Pivot’s New SL Shuttle is a Flyweight eMTB

Light electric bikes seem to be all the rage these days, and Pivot is the latest brand to join the crowd with the claimed Shuttle SL, weighing in at 36.25 lb (16.44 kg). To hit that low figure, the frame is made entirely of carbon and has a 430 Wh battery and Fazua motorcycle produces a torque of 60 Nm. Pivot chose to make the battery integrated to save 500 grams by reducing the wall thickness of the tube and eliminating any hardware needed for quick assembly.

Judging by the specs and geography, this isn’t a long stroke enduro weapon, because the rear travel extends beyond at 132mm of travel and the head tube angle is a steady 65º. That aligns it closely with bikes like Trek Fuel EX-ewhich we tested recently and dedicated Turbo Levo SL.

Pivot has also built in suspension characteristics to work with coil shock, though they recommend the Fox DHX2 for the best compatibility in that respect. Build kits come with 140 and 150mm front wheel travel, but there’s the option to mount 160mm forks.


To keep handling quick and take advantage of the light bike on less demanding roads, the Shuttle SL’s head angle is a moderate 65-degree incline and has short breaks. Those changes with the frame size from 430mm on the small and medium frame, to 432 on the large and 436 on the XL. The rear triangles all use the same die, so changes are made by moving the shaft position on the front triangle, a die that is always fine-tuned for different sizes. .

The Shuttle SL has a flip chip to increase the head angle to 65.5 degrees in “high” mode or make it compatible with the 27.5″ rear wheel. In terms of reach, the four sizes extend from 435 to 500mm. That’s a big gap between the small and medium at 30mm, but only a 13mm increase over the LG at 478mm.

There’s no denying that the eMTB doesn’t come cheap, however, you need to factor in the additional cost of the battery and motor, plus the extra engineering to fit those components into such a lightweight chassis. The starting price for the Shimano SLX/XT package is $8,299 USD and includes 150mm Fox Performance E-MTB 36 Grip forks and Performance Float X shock absorbers.
