A 20-year-old woman was shot in the head and died Wednesday while pushing her infant in a stroller in New York City, according to police.

At about 8:23 p.m., the woman was walking with her 3-month-old baby in Manhattan, near the corner of East 95th Street and Lexington Avenue, when a man wearing a black hoodie and black sweatpants shot her. “from very close range,” said NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell.

The man immediately ran away on foot.

The woman was found unconscious and taken to the hospital. Sewell said she died at 9:20 pm.

No arrests have been made. Sewell could not confirm whether the shooting was a domestic violence incident.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said earlier in the day of the incident he had a meeting with New York City Attorney General Letitia James about “ghost gun”, or untraceable guns, and later met with New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand about the gun trade.

“All day today, we’ve been addressing the overpopulation of guns on our streets, how accessible they are, and how not to be afraid to use them. against innocent New Yorkers, and this is the result,” Adams said.

A vigil was held for victims at the site of Thursday’s shooting.

Gun seizures are at a 28-year high in New York City. There were 2,007 gun seizures between January and May, an annual increase of 84 arrests from the first five months of 2021, the NYPD said.
