Google officially announced its first smartwatch at I/O 2022 in May, but only provide “first look” before its full reveal this fall alongside the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. 9to5Google revealed some new details since then, and here’s everything we know about the Pixel Watch.
Design, display and materials
Pixel watches consist of three distinct layers, starting with a domed top glass that curves all the way to recycled stainless steel dials. According to a early measurement, the circular watch body is about 14mm thick and 40mm wider, while the actual flat display appears to be around 30mm (or 1.18 inches) wide. Google hasn’t revealed what screen resolution it is or what kind of glass protects it.
There is a bottle cap-shaped crown that rotates and can be pressed at 3 o’clock with a button just above it. The case also has a long speaker grille on the left edge and two small circular cutouts.
The upper and lower parts are where the band slots are quite large with 20mm . belt Attaches via a proprietary mechanism that involves inserting at an incline and then snapping into place.
Colors and bands
Google showed off the Pixel Watch in three stainless steel colors:
- Silver: Shiny, Polished Finish
- Black: Non-reflective, possibly matte finish
- Yellow: Darker
In June, we reported that Google was working on a Rich collection of watch bandsalthough not all can be launched or made directly by the company:
- Silicone Strap: Recommended by Google and very similar to Fitbit’s Infinity Strap
- Stretch tape
- Two leather straps: Distinguished by style and lighter/darker shades
- Bracelet Link: Metal
- Milanese-style mesh strap: Made of stainless steel in three body colors
Pixel Watch Specifications
9to5Google in the May report that the Pixel Watch is powered by Samsung’s Exynos 9110. It has a coprocessor and over 1.5GB of RAM, surpassing what is offered on Wear OS today. Meanwhile, 32GB of storage is double that of existing devices and allows users to store many songs offline.
That chip date back to 2018 with a Tizen-enabled Galaxy Watch, but different tasks are offloaded to the coprocessor. It’s unclear how Google will define this SoC and whether Tensor branding will apply.
Alongside Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, Google will offer an LTE cellular model of the Pixel Watch. Other specs include built-in GPS and 50-meter water resistance.
Fitbit and health on Pixel Watch
The Pixel Watch’s big focus is on health, fitness, and fitness. Of course, there’s Fitbit integration that provides a dashboard view of all your stats – just like on existing Fitbit devices, while Google Fit will also be available.
Sensor strip below the Pixel Watch look exactly the same of the Fitbit Luxe and Charge 5. Has a heart rate sensor and hardware support for SpO2 (blood oxygen) and ECG (electrocardiogram) readings.
Wear OS and apps
The Pixel Watch runs Wear OS 3, but it remains to be seen how Google customizes the experience. It will be significantly different from what Samsung has done (One UI Watch) and possibly closer to Launch of Montblanc or Fossil upgrade.
For example, there will be a simple app list instead of a circular bubble launcher, while you can swipe up to see notifications. Pull down for quick settings unchanged, while tiles are accessed by swiping vertically from the watch face.
We did previewed some watch faces that Google is developing. The designs include both digital and analog with most of the slots complex offers, like for Fitbit.
Google Assistant will definitely be a big focus, while there’s Google Pay/Purse tap to pay and navigate on Maps. All of those apps exist to this day, but the company also showed a Google Home App with a utility feed and the ability to receive front door alerts.
Your Pixel Watch can unlock your Android device and Chromebookwhile there will be a Companion App “Google Pixel Watch”. Quick Pairing should also be available to speed up the connection and switch Bluetooth headsets.
Pixel Watch pricing and availability
Google will launch Pixel Watch with Pixel 7 and 7 Pro This waterfall. Pricing has yet to be announced, but the use of stainless steel could increase costs.
