HAMPSHIRE, Ill. (WLS) – Questions remain after a mother from Rolling Meadows and five children were killed in a fiery crash on I-90 in McHenry County Sunday.
The sole survivor of the crash, Thomas Dobosz, 32, is still hospitalized at Loyola University Medical Center here.
A neighbor told ABC7 that he had lost his wife and all of his children in the accident.
Investigators said that just after 2 a.m. Sunday, Dobosz was driving west on I-90 near Hampshire in a blue Chevy van when the driver of the gray Acura, identified as Jennifer Fernandes, 22, of Carpentersville, was driving in the opposite direction and collided with the front end of Dobosz’s car. The soldiers said they found Fernandes dead at the scene as well as all of Dobosz’s passengers, identified as Lauren Dobosz, 31, and five children: two 13-year-old girls, seven and six-year-old boys and a 5 year old child. – old girl.
Neighbors in Rolling Meadows said four of them were the couple’s children.
“When you find out it’s people you’ve known for years, it gets a little harder,” said David Moreno, a neighbor of the Dobosz family. “Losing family in such a split second won’t be easy for anyone.”
Moreno said four of the children were the couple’s children.
“I understand that one of the older daughters has friends with them,” he said. “I knew it would wreak havoc on the community just knowing it was someone everyone already knew.”
The State Police are still trying to figure out why Hernandes went the wrong way. Authorities have yet to release the identities of the five children.
The fatal collision also caused another collision.
When a pickup truck stopped for a medical helicopter to land, officials said, the second pickup didn’t stop in time and the rear ended it.
One of the trailers had been ripped apart and the boxes inside were strewn across the roadway.
