MLB Commerce Deadline 2022: Who Hunter Pence Believes Giants Ought to Goal

Buyer? Seller? Somewhere in between? What the Giants will do before Tuesday’s MLB trading deadline remains to be seen.

San Francisco’s 2022 season is certainly disappointing, and the team has many assets that can produce exciting, young prospects. The Giants, on the other hand, are just four games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the third and final NL wild card placement ahead of Monday night’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Former Giants quarterback Hunter Pence joined The Game 95.7’s Mark Willard and Joe Shasky on “Garlic Fries and Baseball Guys Podcast “where he discusses why San Francisco shouldn’t trade the Carlos Rodón ace and how the team should attack the upcoming deadline.

“When you trade Rodón, it’s a ripple effect, a message,” Pence said. “Whatever you get in return, it helps for now, you won’t be able to win the World Series. We are the San Francisco Giants, we are an incredible organization, we are. i have a huge fan base and we have a Carlos Rodón and Logan Webb, who you can go to the knockout round and as if this is our #1, this is our #2, come and get some. You trade Rodon, you lose that.

“I don’t care who you marry, don’t do this buy/sell. I’m very passionate about this. And by the way, we’re going to play three matches, whatever the case may be, you won’t stand a chance. to do post-season runs, there’s often a 1 and a 2 like that. And the Giants can win every year – we have the support to do that. So for me, you add to this team. We’re losing a -run game, we’re playing a little less defensively. These are things that can be fixed.”

Pence believes that by being a buyer by the deadline, the Giants can build confidence in a squad that hasn’t had much reason to be confident in recent weeks. There is one particular name that Pence believes might be appropriate in San Francisco.

“These players aren’t robots, they’re not just their stats,” Pence explained. “You rock and inspire them all when you buy and have faith, and you’re like, ‘Guess what? We’re going to win this year,’ because of a chance to get into the ring. knockout with a [Carlos] Rodón and a Logan Webb and the cowshed. … Add a little arm or two, add a good defender, go get a Joey Gallo who will really fit in here without you having to give away the farm.

“He’s going to do a lot of things, he’s going to play madly defensively, he’s got one of the strongest arms and helps the pitch staff and sends a message to these players and the city,’ Hey, we’re coming to burn it down, because that’s what we do and we have the team to do it.'”

The biggest name available ahead of time is Washington National Team superstar Juan Soto, who is reported to be the Giants expressed some degree of interest in, but they might not be one of the serious candidates to make the move for him at this point. San Francisco will pay a premium, a premium that Pence doesn’t believe is necessary. Instead, the two-time world champion believes his former side need to make moves to tackle the bullpen and clear the wobbly defense outside.

“You don’t sell the farm to a Juan Soto,” Pence added. “What you do is find a way to find some bullpen arms to support this barn, especially a left-hander coming from a veteran can also give young bullpen arms more confidence. other age is like, “I was on the right track. ‘ Go get another left-hander, and you might have to give up a lead that’s the middle major league or maybe a heavyweight athlete. You don’t give away your blue chip, blue-chip [prospects] because that would happen if you were doing the Juan Soto thing. You get a reliever, which you may have to retrofit, but we can get it at the dealer for free. You go outside and get an extra bat, defend the field, sew up the left defense. “

A deadline buyout himself, Pence knows exactly what kind of deal can offer a team vying for a playoff spot. Pence himself provided a spark that played a big part in San Francisco’s 2012 and 2014 championships, and he believes a similar move could ignite the team this year.
