Mohamed Salah has become the highest-paid Liverpool player in history by signing a new three-year contract worth around £350,000 a week.
The 30-year-old Egyptian put pen to paper on Friday of a deal that will keep him at Anfield until the summer of 2025.
It ends a long saga about his future and provides a huge boost for manager Jurgen Klopp ahead of the season starting next week.
Salah’s previous contract only had one year left to run and there is increasing risk that he will leave as a free agent next summer.
That prospect has now been averted after Liverpool made him a substantial improvement offer.
The Athletic It was recently revealed that the initial negotiations broke down last December after Salah’s agent Ramy Abbas flew to Miami to meet with Fenway Sports Group chairman Mike Gordon.
However, Liverpool always intended to return to the negotiating table after the season ended, and now a compromise has been reached.
Salah’s preference has always been to stay at Anfield but the 30-year-old wants a contract that recognizes his status as one of world football’s greatest players.
Now he has his wish.
With the contract framework in place, Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward flew in to meet Salah on holiday to close the deal.
Of his new contract, Salah told Liverpool’s website: “I feel great and (I’m) very excited to win trophies with the club. It was a happy day for everyone.
“I think it takes some time to refresh, but now that everything is done we just need to focus on what comes next.
“I think you can see in the last five or six years the team is always going up (going up). Last season we were close to winning four titles, but unfortunately in the last week of the season we lost two.
“I think we are in a good position to fight for everything. We also have new contracts. We just have to keep working hard, have a good vision, be positive and start over.
“My message (to the fans) is that the players in the team want to give their best next season to try to win all the trophies.
“As usual, you stay behind us and give us a big boost and I’m sure we’ll win titles again (together).”
“This is a special treat for our supporters to enjoy their weekend even more,” said Klopp. I’m sure there will be some celebration for this news tonight. It was the best decision for us and the best decision for him. I think he belongs to us. This is his club now.
“Of course it takes a bit of time but that’s totally fine and the best things are always worth the wait anyway. Mo is one of the best players in the world; It’s normal, there are things to sort out when you’re on his level. Much credit to Julian Ward and Mike Gordon for guiding us to this destination.
“I have no doubt Mo’s best years are still to come. And that’s saying something, because the first five seasons here have been legendary. “
Salah has scored 156 goals in 254 games since he arrived at Roma for £43.9m in 2017.
