Netflix just rolled out a new trailer for the animated series based on Cyberpunk 2077, and it’s more spectacular than CD Projekt Red’s action role-playing video game.
First announced back in 2020, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is an indie 10-part anime series by CD Projekt Red, Netflix, and Studio Trigger, the anime studio behind shows like Film Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill. Not like it preview versiongiving us hazy but magical shots of neon dripping cityscapes, close-ups of characters, and lightning-fast sakuga action, this trailer gives us a glimpse of the story of the anime.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners follows a street kid named David. After a near-death experience following a hit and run, David joins a group of eccentric petty thieves looking to take down the Night City’s arsenal. The team of edgerunners maintains the same quality of well-crafted character designs. Trigger is known for relating to Cyberpunk 2077 character archetypes: you’ve got Maine, the awesome muscles of the team and of the anime Jackie Welles equivalently, punching girl Dorio, technician Kiwi, eccentric Pilar, sexy fat Lucy, and Rebecca, short-sleeved with short fuses, to round out the crew.
Over the years, Studio Trigger has built a reputation for creating some of anime’s most bombastic action sequences. While some in the anime community consider the studio’s output to be more style than substance, Trigger has recently upgraded its portfolio by building provocative worlds by giving Star Wars a much-needed creative facelift with a few episodes from the Disney+ anthology series, Star Wars: Visionsand through its latest Netflix show, Brand new animals. With Promise director Hiroyuki Imaishi is behind directing this limited anime series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is shaping up to be another award to add to the anime studio’s resume.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners slated for release on August 31st.
