New York Yankees get Frankie Montas begin, nearer Lou Trivino from Oakland Athletics

The New York Yankees have acquired a right-handed starter Frankie Montas and closer Lou Trivino in a deal with the Oakland Athletics, the Yankees announced Monday.

Team A is getting Ken Waldichuk and JP Sears, right wing is Luis Medina and second defender Cooper Bowman from the Yankees. Waldichuk, 24, is the fifth-highest-ranked prospect in the Yankees farm chain, according to MLB.com.

America’s best league Yankees have had a busy deadline, buy midfielders Andrew Benintendi and rookie painkillers Scott Effross before consolidating an already strong and growing turnaround with the acquisitions of Montas and Trivino.

The Montas purchase is the second involving a highly sought-after starter pitcher this week, after Seattle acquired right-hand man Luis Castillo from the Cincinnati Reds for a package of four potential clients.

Montas, a 29-year-old who did not qualify as a free agent until after the 2023 season, has shown excellence since signing for Boston in 2009. He has been traded for Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers before moving to Oakland, where he has grown over the past six seasons to become a 104⅔ pitcher this season 3.18 ERA with 109 shots, 28 Walks and a dozen runs home are allowed.

A shoulder injury prevented Montas from starting in mid-July, but he returned with three full innings, followed by a five-round, two-round start against Houston. It’s a sample enough to appeal to a large market of groups – large and small markets.

The Yankees have won sweepstakes in Montas and added a starter that will make it to the knockout stages with the quick throw-slide-split-ball combination that has proven effective throughout the season. Montas played at least five innings in 15 of his first 16 games, with the only exception being a game where he was hit in the hand of a hitter and left the game after 1⅔ innings.

Trivino, 30, is 1-6 with an ERA of 6.47 and 10 saves this season. He will qualify as a referee next year and will not become a free agent until 2025.

Waldichuk, who is pitching at the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, is 6-3 with a 2.71 ERA overall in 17 primary catches for two clubs in the Yankees minor league system this season and has 116 shot in 76⅓ innings.

Sears, 26, is 3-0 with an ERA of 2.05 in 22 innings for the Yankees in the pro this season and is 1-1 with an ERA of 1.67 in 43 innings in Triple-A. Medina, 23, is 4-3 with a 3.38 ERA in 17 starts for Double-A Somerset this season.

Bowman, 22, is hitting .217 with eight home runs and 35 RBIs for Class-A Hudson Valley this season.
