Spurs use waiver request towards Isaiah Roby

The Spurs used the disclaimer request to add Isaiah Roby on their roster, a source told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link).

Veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein was the first to report (via Twitter) that there is a “strong worldwide expectation” that Roby will be asked on the wire to give up.

Like Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report previously noted, Roby earned more than the minimum wage in the first year of his four-year contract with the Thunder, so the Spurs will have to use some of their cap space to absorb his $1,930,681 salary. it for 2022/23. Exemptions are rare for non-minimum players, but Roby has shown some promise, so San Antonio should pick up a relatively cheap flyer about him contributing next season. .

In his third season with the Thunder in ’21/22, 6’8″ Roby averaged a career-best 10.1 PPG alongside 4.8 RPG on .514/.444/.672 when shot in 45 games (21.1 MPG). Oklahoma City had previously chosen club optionbut then there’s Thunder exempted him before his contract was fully secured.

Spurs recently agreed signal Gorgui Dieng and now have added Roby, so obviously adding extra depth is a priority with the last spots on their roster. After all San Antonio first-round picks are signed with their new deals ( Blake Wesley was Signed so far, but the remaining two games are just formalities), Spurs are expected to have a full 15-man squad.

Even taking into account the new additions, Spurs still have over $30 million in hat room this season, so they have many options to work with in the future.
