State Senator Roland Gutierrez calls Uvalde CISD police chief a ‘scapegoat;’ Gov explosion. Abbott, DPS for system errors

State Senator Roland Gutierrez said he considers Uvalde CISD Police Chief Pete Arredondo a mere scapegoat for the systemic failures that led to the mass school shootings that left 21 dead.

“Certainly Pete Arredondo has been made the scapegoat for the great number of failures that have occurred on every possible level.Gutierrez said in a July 4 interview with CNN.

Gutierrez said Public Safety Department Director Steve McCraw has quickly point the finger in Arredondo when there were more soldiers on the scene than the county police.

“I don’t know Peter Arredondo. No need to know him; Gutierrez said. “But at the end of the day, we had a lot of DPS soldiers on the scene — 12 of the 19 in that hallway, 12 were DPS soldiers. What are system errors? “

Gutierrez said he was happy Arredondo resigns from his City Council seat said that’s what his voters want to happen.

“I think this will at least start that part of the healing process for this gentleman. But I think we also need to (not) forget that the accountability isn’t just on him,” he said.

Gutierrez said transparency is needed in the investigation because he doesn’t believe the fault in the failed response to the May 24 shooting lies solely with Arredondo.

“It was part of Operation Lonestar, 91 soldiers were on the scene and eight other agencies were in that corridor,” he said.

Gutierrez called it possibly the worst mass shooting, not in terms of the number of people killed but in terms of law enforcement response.

“This is probably the longest time to wait for law enforcement to step in,” he said. “We don’t know how many children might bleed, but systemic and human error here abounds.”

Gutierrez is lawsuit DPS to access files related to the Robb Elementary School massacre, said he wanted to see the truth for himself because he wouldn’t trust another “glazed presentation” from DPS.

“If it were anything like the DPS Senate presentation, I can’t believe I would trust that finding,” Gutierrez said.

State senator says he believes Governor Greg Abbott shared incorrect information in his first press conference because he had a story he wanted to cover.

“And that story is the story of this hero and how the Texas Department of Public Safety (and) his own Operation Lone Task Force went in and saved the day. That’s not what happened,” Gutierrez told CNN. “His own task force is part of the systemic failures that have happened and the failures of management.

“We haven’t even started looking at the levels of responsibility we need to have here. And it started at the top in Texas. People need to keep asking and asking for change and asking for accountability,” he said.

Gutierrez also took out tough criticism against Uvalde District Attorney Christina Mitchell Busbee for her lack of transparency.

“And she, the district attorney, was the first one to come out and shout ‘stop’ at everyone and tell everyone they were ordered not to communicate,” Gutierrez said. chief that he could not speak to the media. She went on to tell city officials that if they spoke to the media, they would commit a crime and they could potentially be prosecuted. to me, it’s just a farce. And if we don’t have transparency in government, then we don’t have democracy.”
