Suspect recognized in mass stabbing on Wisconsin River

Authorities say a Minnesota teen has died and four others were seriously injured after being stabbed while falling into a river in Wisconsin. Sheriff of St. Croix, Scott Knudson said the victims and suspect, Nicolae Miu, 52, of Prior Lake, Minnesota, were all on the Apple River when the attack happened Saturday afternoon. Knudson said investigators are working to determine what led to the stabbing and whether the victim and suspect knew each other. They went tube with two different groups consisting of about 20 people. Knudson said: “ We still don’t know who hooked up with whom, who knows each other or what ended it. The knife attack happened on an inaccessible stretch of river near the town of Somerset, Wisconsin, about 35 miles (56 km) east of Minneapolis. The suspect was arrested about an hour and a half later while descending into the river. Knudson told the Minneapolis Star Tribune: “ Thank goodness a witness took his picture. Another witness found him at the exit of the pipeline area, where he was arrested. Two of the other victims were taken to a hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, and two others were taken there by ambulance. The sheriff’s office said Sunday that the conditions of all four surviving victims – one woman and three men in their 20s – ranged from severe to critical. They suffered stab wounds to the chest and torso. The sheriff’s office did not name the victims, but provided few details about them. The victims included a 20-year-old man and a 22-year-old man from Luck, Wisconsin; a 22-year-old man from the Elk River, Minnesota; and a 24-year-old woman from Burnsville, Minnesota; The suspect’s name was not immediately released, but St. Croix shows a 52-year-old man being held without bond on suspicion of first-degree murder, four counts of aggravated battery use, and four counts of disorderly conduct.
